Super Squarecloud are a four-piece with boxes on their heads who specialise in raw, melodic alternative rock with a pleasingly rough'n'ready, recorded-on-a-tape-recorder-in-someone's-garage feel. Their songs are full of unexpected, interesting touches, like the sporadic bleeps in “Berry System” and the way “It Gak” manages to progress from an almost Four Tet-like tinkly bell intro to a climax of rising guitar feedback while still remaining cohesive. Singer Jo Ford, whose style is slightly reminiscent of Tin Roots vocalist Ruby Taylor, simultaneously compliments and contrasts with the jangly guitars and fuzz bass, and as she calmly instructed me to 'jump!' over “JMPTHNFLYNW”'s squiggly squeals of guitar, I found myself pleasantly reminded that it is still possible to do interesting things with the standard four-piece setup without ripping off countless other bands.
                                          And that's nice to know.
