The Critical Transmission is a three piece band based in Bristol who describe themselves as an “Electronic/Post-rock band with Classical and Minimalist elements.” From listening to their tracks, I can hear several clear influences in their music, most notably bands such as “Godspeed You! Black Emperor” and “Mogwai”.

I would definitely say that older Post-rock bands have certainly had more of an influence on this band’s tracks than the newer wave of Post-rock. The music is not based around crescendos or catchy melodies but instead utilises the instruments to create a soundscape, focusing on the timbre of the piece. This is most obvious to me in the song “The Abandonment”. The song slowly builds dynamically throughout until abruptly dying off at the end. Whilst the dynamic swells, new instrument parts and layers are introduced to build the soundscape or “wall of sound” as it is often referred to.

The Critical Transmission has an impressively large sound for a three piece band and have created music that is musically intriguing and hauntingly beautiful. Stating that they are going to change their style and “evolve into Shoegaze fuzz guitars with shy vocals”, I would expect something that is musically similar to what they performing now with more influence from 80’s Shoegaze bands such as “My Bloody Valentine”. Unfortunately in today’s music scene, smaller Post-rock bands tend not to have much of a following and often struggle to get going, often not receiving the recognition that they deserve. I have no doubt however, that if The Critical Transmission continues to put out music of this quality and up their game, they will go far.
