Staring out of the window at a cold, wet day, only too acutely aware of the inexorable slide towards winter, and the promise of months and months of sub-zero temperatures and little or no sunlight? Close your eyes and listen to South Folk Rhythms, and you could be sitting in a picturesque Italian square with the sun beaming down on you while a charming combo regale you with breezy singalongs.
You won't actually be sitting in a charming Italian square with the sun beaming down on you, but if we don't have escapism, what the hell do we have?
South Folk Rhythms play bright, cheerful songs with a dash of folk and a sprinkling of swing. Combining rascally guitar playing, authentic and heartfelt singing and just enough pop nous to avoid sliding into pastoral pastiche, the music might sound anachronistic in an edge when everyone wants to be frighteningly edgy and postmodern, but what's wrong with listening to something that's just nice for a change? And more to the point, what's wrong with the word nice? It doesn't have to mean boring.
Put South Folk Rhythms on your MP3 player and pop outside, and even if it's pissing down with rain, I guarantee you'll have a spring in your step. You might even do a bit of a skip. And if that's not worth something, then I don't know what is.
